All retreats explore the freeing up of the body, release of muscular restrictions and habit patterns, and an exploration of the link between how we hold ourselves, our emotions, and our ability to be truly "authentic" and present.
Awareness through Movement (origins in the Feldenkrais Method): Ways to alter not only the structural, but also, the emotional, psycho-spiritual, ways of the artist. 5th Chakra Retreats are progressive at the level of body, mind, and spirit. They move from considerations of breath to head to toe, through everything in the middle, never leaving out emotion. Once we have settled into the body, taken heed of areas of tension, pain, and frustration, we begin to add in more expressive, practical, and creative material so that we can incorporate the work. Using a mixture of mat sequences derived from the Feldenkrais Method, directed at bringing awareness and opening to the way we use (or don't use) our shoulders, neck, hips, feet, etc., plus a variety of relaxing and invigorating breathing modalities, our time spent together on mats and in circles will also be full of creativity and connection with ourselves and with the group. It is understood that the topic of trauma and reintegration is a constant undercurrent of this work. These are called 5th Chakra Retreats for the simple reason that the throat chakra bridges the lower and upper sensibilities and energetics of the body. The added focus given to this chakra is of use for integration of the new work, and also, pure joy in self expression. Approaching the last third of the retreat, we'll begin to incorporate this new freedom in our body with use of the voice and free dance. For voice, we'll practice Chakra Toning, kirtan, and experiment with speaking in front of one another in a group in new and dynamic ways. For the body, we'll have the opportunity to move or dance in improvisatory fashion to world music for a few hours. Certain evenings we'll have circle presentations where topics such as trauma patterns in the body and eyes, the beauty and significance of pain both physical and mental, rage and agitation, feeling stuck in the throat chakra, and more! What is the Feldenkrais Method? Feldenkrais has been used to help people avoid and repair from all manner of surgeries, ranging from knee to shoulder and all other commonalities. It is also used to help developmentally impaired children develop apace far beyond the proclamations of doctors. (I'll be uploading studies). Lastly, it goes deep into psychology because the attention to movement and presence causes the body to ponder its holding patterns. It is an approach to the body that is about YOU. Your attention, awareness, and power, ability to change, heal, release tension, and adapt. It is not just physical, it is also mental and deeply psychological, because we learn quickly through this approach that we have so much power to change our reality. And yet, the change is not because we think it or will it, it is because we sit quietly with focus and intention. The body’s natural response is to shift towards ease and positive change. |
