Healing Through the VoiceThe whole of the vocal mechanism is inseparable with the whole of our lives. Everything from the chords themselves to the alignment and coordination of posture, the sum total of our habit patterns both functional and perhaps extraneous, our ways of breathing, our medical histories
A classically trained opera singer, I stumbled upon coaching work quite by accident while working at a yoga, meditation, and detox centre. The guests, finding themselves in rapid healing mode from the juice and fresh air, would approach me after my vocal practice time with their hands on their throat asking for a coaching. One woman said "I feel like I just finally understood what my therapist has been trying to tell me for 8 years." This is not because I have any special powers as a coach or voice teacher. It is because the vocal mechanism is magical, as it connects to every organ, body system, and vital life function related to healthy living and also trauma. Connecting to one's voice connects to the entire function of one's self-expression, psychology, posture, habits, and trauma/memories. I work differently with each person and trust that their own unique desires and perceived blocks will inspire the best approach toward re-connecting the innate and healthy vocal coordination -- and therefore also mental and spiritual harmony -- that is our birthright as much as any other. Sometimes we will focus the work on mind-body approaches such as guided meditation, feldenkrais, and other breathing experiments. At other times, I offer more traditional "voice lessons" but leave space for discussions to occur based on sensations and frustrations and positive responses. I work with a wide range of people including those in the business and financial sectors wishing hone their presentational skills, people suffering from complex PTSD, a range of ages of people who wish to deepen self understanding and remove blocks to confident speech or singing, traditional voice students, and those suffering from a range of psychiatric disorders such as bi-polar disorder.
